Viewing cards in a grid
Mingle's grid view lets you view cards as they might appear as real cards on a wall or whiteboard. You can drag and drop cards to update their status, or assign cards to a developer, or close an issue - in fact however your team chooses to work.
To view cards in a grid, select the cards you want to work with and then click the Grid link.
A great way to use the Grid view is in maximized mode with a projector. This helps your team collaborate on project kickoffs, iteration planning, project priorities, backlog items and when assigning tasks to team members. This is similar to using a whiteboard or card wall to move cards around.
How to view cards in a grid
- Sign in to Mingle and open the project for which to view cards in a grid (if you're not currently working in the project).

Click the All tab.
You can also click any other tab that displays cards.

Filter the card list to isolate the cards you want to work with. In the image above, the list has been filtered to show only cards of type story, which are open.
If you have existing similar tabs or favorites setup, you can select one of these as a starting point and then change the filters.

Click the Grid link. Mingle displays all cards on the page in a grid format.
What can you do on the Grid view?
Filter cards
View cards
You can see the brief information about any cards via pop up in the grid view. Simply click on any mini cards to prompt the pop up. If you want to go to the card to see more information, you can click on the 'Open' link on the pop up, or click on the card number on the mini cards.
Create cards with Quick Add
Quick Add allows you to create a new card from any project page. The Quick Add button can be found on the bottom left of your browser window in the task tray.
The Quick Add button makes it easy to create cards with default values preset for the selected card type.
Using 'Add With Detail'
On the Quick Add popup you can also create a new card using 'Add with detail'. Upon clicking the 'Add with detail' button, you will be taken to the new card's edit page where you can make additional changes to the card (e.g. adding a description) before saving it to complete the card creation.
Create cards with the Quick Add Card
The Quick Add Card appears on all grid views and can be found on the bottom left of your browser window in the task tray. The Quick Add allows you to quickly create a new card that will appear on the current grid view. To create a new card using the Quick Add Card simply drag and drop the Quick Add Card onto the grid view. Once dropped the Quick Add Card gives you pop-up to enter the card title. Property values are preset to allow the card to appear on the grid view once the card is saved.
How property values are set using the Quick Add Card
The Quick Add Card makes it easy to create cards that will appear on the current grid view by pre-setting the new card's properties to values that match the current grid view filters and grid cell.
The following rules are used to determine the preset values for the new Card:
- Grid view cell - Mingle will set the property values such that they match the property value of the corresponding cell on the grid view.
- Filters - Mingle will set property values such that they match the corresponding view filter. In cases where the property value is ambiguous (e.g. the filter specifies a "greater than" range instead of a strict "equals" comparison), Mingle will choose a property value that satisfies the filter.
- Card Defaults - Mingle wills set property values to match the default values configured for the designated card type.
When deciding which value to use for a card property the value determined by the grid view cell overrides the value determined by a filter and the value determined by a filter will override a default property value.
Using the Quick Add Card with the Advanced (MQL) filter
While the Quick Add Card's behavior is consistent under most filter scenarios there are two exceptions when using the Advanced (MQL) filter that should be noted:
- Card property values that are specified in the Advanced filter will be displayed as (not set).
- When using the 'FROM TREE' MQL statement, filter properties are ignored and the only properties displayed are the default properties for the selected card type.
Update cards
There are a number of ways you can update cards within the Grid view
- by clicking on a card and clicking the Open link. This lets you edit all details for a card including properties, description and tags.
- by dragging cards to other lanes. This lets you update the card property that is represented within the grouped lanes.
If the cards are grouped by a transition only property and transitions have been created for that property, dragging and dropping cards in the grid view will trigger automated transitions.
Rank cards
Card ranking on the grid view allows users to move individual cards and use card position as a way of ranking cards.
Group cards
When you first open a card grid view, Mingle displays all cards on the page without any grouping. To change the card layout, you can group cards by rows and columns according to a selected card property. You can group rows and columns by the following property types: card type, managed text, managed numeric, user and tree relationship properties.
Grouping by column only will produce a view where cards are displayed vertically by the selected property.
Grouping by row only will produce a view where cards are displayed horizontally by the selected property.
What's the difference between grouping by column only and grouping by row only? Other than the difference in layout, cards cannot be dragged between rows but they can be dragged between columns. Also aggregate headers and the ability to add or remove a group only apply to columns.
Grouping by column and row will produce a grid view with cards showing at the intersection of rows and columns.
Sort cards
By default cards will be sorted by rank (if you have not ranked any cards this rank will be the same as card number). Users can change the sort order and view the cards sorted by other properties.
You can Sort by the following property types: rank, card number, card type, managed text, managed numeric, user and tree relationship properties which are available for selected card type
Color cards
Mingle lets you further refine the Grid view by coloring cards according to a property value. If you have already assigned colors to card property values, Mingle displays colors for cards immediately and shows a Color legend in the bottom-right of the page to explain the colors. You can update these colors directly by clicking on the square next to the property value.
Mingle displays the cards by color in the same order as in the Color legend. Setup the order from Project admin tab, Card properties link.
You can Color by the following property types: card type, managed text and managed numeric properties which are available for selected card type
Show column headings
You can modify your row and column headings via two heading dropdowns; select an aggregation and then a numeric property you want to apply the aggregation to.
Available aggregations
- SUM - add all cards' selected numeric property values in each lane. If that property has a value of (not set), then it's considered as 0.
- Average - divide the sum of all cards' selected numeric property by the number of cards in each lane. If that property has a value of (not set) then that card is not counted as total number of cards. For example, if 1 of 3 cards has (not set) value the sum will be divided by 2, not 3.
- Minimum - returns the minimum value of the selected property amongst all cards in each lane.
- Maximum - returns the maximum value of the selected property amongst all cards in each lane.
- Count - returns the number of cards in each lane. No property selection will be offered.
This feature is useful for planning, as you can show the sum of the estimates in the column headings.
Add or remove columns
Within the Grid view, you can hide existing columns, or show columns for property values not currently shared between any of the displayed cards. Click the Add / remove columns link to update the columns that display. This is useful when you want to update a card's property value by clicking and dragging onto a column that doesn't currently display.
Link to this page
Each card view has a link called Link to this page. This is identical to the browser address (URL), but gives you a quick way to create links to the current card view. You can use these links to send to people via email or instant messaging (IM), or to place on a website, blog or Mingle wiki page. In Windows, right-click on this link to bring up options for copying or sending.
Maximize the view
The card grid can be viewed in the maximized mode. This will allow for cleaner, more useful views when working with your Mingle cards.
Create favorites and tabs
If you've found a card Grid view that your team will use regularly, e.g. for allocating new user stories to an iteration, you can save this view by clicking the Favorites link on the right. You can then turn this into a tab.
